HDR (High Dynamic Range Imaging) support for Linux desktops has been a work in progress and a pain point for years compared to Windows. Recently, Pierre-Loup Griffais of the Valve Linux team Announce HDR support in Linux games is already working.

At present, the HDR function has been tested on AMD machines, and the tested games are Halo Infinite (Halo: Infinite, also known as Halo 6, released by Microsoft at the end of 2021), Deep Rock Galactic (Deep Rock Galaxy, released in 2020Science fiction theme first-person shooter game)and DEATH STRANDING DC (Death Stranding, an action game developed by Sony, which will be launched on the PC side in March 2022).

It can be seen that the tests are all modern games that require high quality graphics, and are basically released on the Windows platform, without optimizing the Linux platform. But as Linus said “the future of the Linux desktop is at Valve,” Valve has invested heavily in improvements to the underlying Linux graphics stack over the years, and it’s starting to pay off.

HDR functionality for Linux games is still in its early stages and will take some time to be fully developed before it becomes available to the general public.
