Raspberry Pi recently launched a new camera module, the name is very straightforward, it is called Camera Module 3. This module is also an upgraded version of Camera Module 2 released in 2016.
The new module uses the Sony IMX708 sensor (the same sensor as the Oppo Find X2), has 12 million pixels (the previous generation Camera Module 2 is 8 million pixels), can shoot up to 1080P @50 frame video, and the new module supports high dynamic range ( HDR) photography and autofocus, and can output RAW10 file format.
Based on the above data, the Camera Module 3 should be able to capture photos with more details (especially in low light), autofocus uses a phase detection autofocus (PDAF) system, and can be 5 cm to infinity distance object to focus on. In contrast, previous versions of the camera module were fixed-focus lenses. However, these newly added functions also make Camera Module 3 thicker than the previous version.
The Raspberry Pi has launched four different Camera Module 3 modules, which are divided into standard viewing angle, wide-angle, and NoIR version for night photography:
- Camera Module 3: $25
- Camera Module 3 Wide Angle: $35
- Camera Module 3 NoIR: $25
- Camera Module 3 NoIR Wide Angle: $35
At present, these modules have been sold on the official website, and users who need them can jump to understand and purchase.
