Paint.net 5.0 is a major update that includes new features and improvements such as pen and tablet pressure sensitivity, greatly expanded GPU access to effects, adjustments and tools, and a brand new effects plugin system that includes Support for GPU rendering with Direct2D.

- The application has been updated to run on .NET 7.
- Pens and graphics tablets that support Windows Ink now support pressure sensitivity for the brush tools (Brush, Eraser, Clone Stamp, Recolor).
- The settings dialog now has a graphics section for configuring GPU and hardware acceleration settings
- Most effects and adjustments have been rewritten to perform on the GPU.Requires a Direct3D 11 compatible GPU, otherwise CPU rendering will be used

- The Settings dialog now has a Pens and Artboards section, which currently has a checkbox to enable/disable Windows Ink.
- The brush tool now supports path smoothing, which is enabled by default and can be toggled in the toolbar.

- You can now tap and hold the +/- buttons in the toolbar without repeatedly tapping them
- Image → Resize now has an ultra-high quality “Adaptive (best quality)” option, which is now the default

- Now requires Windows 10 or Windows 11, Windows 7 and 8.1 are no longer supported.
- Now requires a 64-bit CPU and 64-bit version of Windows, supports AMD/Intel x64 and ARM64, no longer supports 32-bit x86.
- Extensive optimization work throughout the application and rendering engine resulting in smoother and faster performance
- Layers and history windows now use the GPU for rendering
- The thumbnails in the layers window have been enlarged by 20%
- The image thumbnail list at the top of the main window is now rendered using the GPU
- Effects now run at a higher, smoother frame rate, where updates were previously limited to 20 frames per second.
