Raspberry Pi (Raspberry Pi) CEO Eben Upton revealed in an interview recently that they have produced more than 10 million RP2040 chips since 2021, and more Raspberry Pi stores may be opened in the future.

According to Upton’s calculations, a wafer can produce about 2000 30mm dies, while 45mm chips like the ones in the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and Raspberry Pi 4 (BCM2710 and BCM2711, respectively) can only be produced 1400.

Upton said that they purchased 500 wafers in 2021, and each wafer can produce 21,000 to 22,000 RP2040 chips (about 2 square millimeters in size), approximately producing more than 10 million RP2040 chips.

So Upton prefers to steer enthusiasts to buy the Raspberry Pi Pico / RP2040, and shows his support by stating that he wants the Pico to be a future-proof product. He is said to have taken the strategic step of buying “millions” of the many other components that make up the board (buck/boost converter, Wi-Fi, etc.). These bulk purchases mean that it’s almost impossible for the Raspberry Pi Pico to run out of stock.

During the show, co-host Ash Hill asked Upton about opening more Raspberry Pi stores, and Upton talked about possible overseas expansion. According to Upton, India has a large Raspberry Pi community and it could be a viable location for a future store, which will also be the first Raspberry Pi store not based in the UK.
