Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS was originally scheduled to be released on February 9th.but Canonical announcesThe release had to be delayed by two weeks due to various issues and was scheduled for release on February 23rd.
Canonical’s Lukasz Zemczak explained in an email to the Ubuntu developers mailing list:
Some unexpected complications arose during the preparation of the HWE 5.19 kernel for Ubuntu 22.04.2, and as shim 15.7 entered the archives, we decided we needed more time to get everything ready, and finally decided to move the 22.04.2 release date to February 23rd.
The Ubuntu point release is mainly to incorporate the latest software packages, this version is upgraded from Linux kernel 5.15 to 5.19, and uses the latest shim 15.7 version.
The Linux 5.19 kernel is the default kernel version for Ubuntu 22.10. For Ubuntu 22.04 LTS users, upgrading to the 5.19 kernel means newer hardware driver support, such as newer graphics processors, WiFi hardware, and other new features enabled after 5.15. hardware. Additionally, there are many kernel optimizations and other enhancements between Linux 5.15 and 5.19.
But while upgrading, HWE 5.19 had some unpredictable compiler and DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) issues, which caused the release of the new version to be delayed, and developers needed to solve “challenging” compiler and dkms issues, Further testing is required.
In addition, the new shim 15.7 package has brought some problems. The shim 15.7 update revoked all currently used keys and dropped fwupd and GRUB. They need more time to transition updates in order to avoid some issues that break the security of the system. This mailing list post explains the difficulties encountered when dealing with shim updates and transitioning to new keys.
In summary, the Ubuntu development team believes that an additional two weeks is needed to deal with various issues and conduct more tests to provide a stable and reliable LTS version.
