Source repository for stable and long-term maintenance releases of the Linux Kernel.
After each mainline version of the Linux kernel is released, it will be converted to a stable branch for maintenance. Stable releases backport bugfixes from the mainline and are maintained by designated stable branch maintainers. There are usually only a few bugfix kernel releases, usually maintained for several months, before the next mainline kernel is available. Stable kernel updates are released on an as-needed basis, usually on a weekly basis.
In stable releases, there are usually several “long-term maintenance” kernel releases, generally maintained for 2 or 6 years. The linux stable repository is the basis for many linux-derived kernels.
