OBS Studio 28 is now released,This release marks the 10th anniversary of OBS.This is a major update release with many new important features and other upgrades. These include:

  • 10-bit and HDR encoding support
    • Currently only HDR and 10-bit color can be encoded using the AV1 and HEVC encoders. 10-bit HEVC encoding requires an NVIDIA 10 series, AMD 5000 series or newer GPU. Intel QuickSync and Apple VT are not yet supported.
    • The recommended settings for HDR are Color Format P010 & Color Space Rec. 2100 PQ
    • If one wishes to encode 10-bit SDR, the user can use Color Format P010 which contains the SDR color space (eg Rec. 709, Rec. 601). Still need AV1 or HEVC though
    • HDR streaming via HEVC encoder is currently only supported using YouTube’s HLS service
    • Games running in HDR now map correctly to SDR when compositing in SDR
    • Video capture devices can be used to capture and stream HDR if supported by the device (e.g. EVGA XR1 Pro, Elgato 4K60 Pro Mk.2, AverMedia Live Gamer 4K)
    • Some filters will not work if the source is rendered with HDR: Apply LUT, Chroma Key, Color Key, Image Mask/Blend, Luma Key, Sharpness
    • Mac/Linux support is limited. HDR preview does not work, several inputs/encoders still need to be updated.
  • Upgrade UI framework to Qt6 (all platforms)
    • Windows 7 and 8, macOS 10.13 and 10.14, Ubuntu 18.04 and all 32-bit operating systems are no longer supported since Qt 6. Therefore, OBS Studio no longer supports the following OS platforms:
      • Windows 7 & 8
      • macOS 10.13 & 10.14
      • Ubuntu 18.04
      • All 32-bit operating systems
    • Additionally, many third-party plugins that depend on Qt5 components may not function properly until they are upgraded to Qt6
  • Native support for Apple Silicon (macOS)
    • Note that many third-party plugins need to release an Apple Silicon version of their plugin to run on an OBS that supports Apple Silicon
  • New features and additions:
    • Native integration of obs-websocket 5.0 plugin (all platforms), click here for details
    • Upgrade AMD encoder implementation (Windows)
    • Supports ScreenCaptureKit on macOS 12.5+, significantly improving screenshot performance
    • Major improvements to the Apple VT encoder (macOS)
    • Application-specific audio capture (Windows)
    • Integrated NVIDIA remove background function (Windows)
    • Supports automatic cutting of recordings by time or file size (all platforms)
    • Added new default theme Yami (all platforms)
