This award is given to groups and individuals in the free software community who have made significant contributions to the cause of software freedom. There are 3 awards in total, namely the Award for the Advancement of Free Software, the Award for Projects of Social Benefit and the Award for Outstanding New Free Software Contributor).

Free Software Advancement Award

The FSF Free Software Advancement Award is awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the advancement and advancement of free software through activities consistent with the spirit of the community.

Social Benefit Engineering Award

The FSF Social Benefit Project Award is given to those “responsible for applying the principles of the free software movement to other areas of life, their free software/open source projectsintentionally and significantlyAn organization or team that benefits society.

Outstanding New Free Software Contributor Award

The Outstanding New Free Software Contributor Award is awarded annually to a newcomer in the community who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to software freedom.

Laureates must make their first major contribution related to free software in 2022 and remain active. Significant contributions may include: attracting and retaining contributors by organizing local meetups, software development, participating in the strategic or logistical planning of the project, working on documentation, or helping to improve the open source environment… .
