  1. I see where you are coming from. I think WordPress is a good place to begin for a lot of developers. I got a few freelance gigs in it which helped me to become an React/Vue developer. I still do some freelance work on the side in wordpress but it is more custom css/html/javascript than it is simply installing premade WordPress themes.

But I agree it shouldn't be a main focus and could hidder the growth of a developer.

  2. I mostly agree. We have people who do not even know how to build a simple static HTML/; CSS website but are now building large Government/ company sites using WordPress. Most of the sites have the lifespan of the version of WordPress. Once an upgrade is needed, they do not even know how to upgrade without starting afresh! If they delete what they do not need, in some cases, the space remains, so you find large gaps on a web page. Move from one page to another and you see the site looks completely different! I do not think WordPress is entirely to blame, but may be it promised too much!

Browse most African GOVERNMENT websites and you will see how they are abusing WordPress. On so many sites, I still find the placeholder text that was on a template even though those sites are being done by self-proclaimed Web App professionals. In some African countries, they try to use WordPress to do all, Government Apps like IT Government Services, and boy, they do not work. Hundreds of free and paid plugins to do the complex backend work the "developers" cannot even write a simple PHP echo statement and that is BECAUSE of that promise that WordPress can do sites without writing code.

  3. I just bought my first domain and I want to see what I can do with wordpress. I don't care how many websites use wordpress, I just want to use something that I can do something with. And that is wordpress. So let me go now and make my first website. Thank you!

  4. I love WordPress, but all the theme and plugins updates take up a lot of time which is annoying. I'm wondering what you think of Ghost(Pro)?

  5. Am from Kampala, Uganda
Your argument is like that of why Windows Os is popular against macOS and Linux.
It's the usage and how fast people jump on and do something on it.
Actually, there is no Agency that specialises in only static HTML, CSS and javascript, you need to have a content management system on top of that, which is costly to craft one from scratch when WordPress is around: hence WordPress.

  6. this isn't quite how it works in UK, to be honest. WP devs are paid quite well… and have to know php, JS, mysql, jquery, html, css anyway (plus frameworks ). WP in my experience is a good place to start.. and its not what I did. WP is a fairly well paid positon in UK compared to other dev front end posts. but then, I have to say compared to US… they're all pretty badly paid. Backend is where the money is… in fact, if you want to earn good money in UK.. then the best paying jobs are software dev focus on one language. I work as a dev in webdev. WP is just a tool to get the job done quickly.. because time is money… but they wont let you near WP until you know full stack.. pretty much. However, WP.. in my humble opinion, can be good place to start.. i think its immaterial whether you learn padding, margin style etc.. from WP first.. then from code.. or whether like me you learn html, css,js… then WP. I think main difference is with WP you're job ready quicker. this sucks for code purists.. and even i dont like it… but at the end of the day business only cares about the end product..

  7. Really bad advice. I can agree maybe about WordPress ecosystem. But please all programmers need to understand JavaScript is not only language out there. Stop pushing everyone on learn js app for front end. NO! That’s totally different path.

  8. Do you have a video about which would be a better approach in case I have my customers and I just need productivity (like, do all of it faster)?
Not necessarily needing to put that on my resume.

  9. Dorian did an updated video stating why it is a good idea to also learn WordPress. My first gig while used not only JS, CSS, and HTML but also used WordPress. WordPress is part of a development stack LAMP, WAMP, MAMP. Take a week or two with it and open up your opportunities as a web dev.

  10. I follow Dorian's advice a lot but I disagree on this one. I think WordPress is good especially for freelancing. Also you can code and do wp at the same time. Some projects like e-commerce are easier to implement in wp than using actual code. I also know of startups that use wp like a nerd's world and have really amazing websites on their portfolio.

  11. WordPress is not so different from one using Dreamweaver or Copy pasting snippets from online to speed up web development. Since it's so hard to understand tags and function after you encounter it on the study, it's better if your have bunch of example that give you idea how it's work. The only worst part is if you fully depend of this tool. And why WordPress developers and Full stuck developers are different category?

  12. Dude, thank you for sharing this. I have been learning front end for a while ( html, css, js, react, etc.) And was challenged by someone recently when asked how long it took me to build a site. They told me 'Your wasting your time" and that 'you could build this in WordPress way faster'. I started to second guess myself but I'm glad I didn't take the bait now! Thanks!

  13. I was searching for the web developers gig on Fiverr and I found that the maximum gigs are offering the WordPress websites. What does it means. are HTML CSS and JS websites not worthy than that of WordPress ??

  14. WordPress is the leading and battle-tested CMS. It's developed by tons of senior programmers from a huge community. If you leave it, you'll miss the opportunity to learn good practices coming from it. You'll learn how to use the already built-in features: taxonomy, hooks, custom post types, nav walker, settings API, REST API, AJAX…, not even mentioning the newest features like Gutenberg and headless WP.

As someone who's coming from Spring and Laravel, I got tons of lessons from WordPress and how to better structure my projects.

  15. Thanks, after spending lots of time learning Html, CSS, JavaScrip, git, React, Bootstrap but I still find myself stuck for opportunities. I was going to jump and learn WordPress because the amount of jobs advertised. Much apreciated content

  16. Although this is true in someway I think you should put a disclaimer in your advices ,because as this is true in first world countries for people in third world countries wordpress is actually a valuable tool as most most people only pay low compared to other places so using wordpress in agencies is quite popular

  17. Great video bro, I am a wordPress developer for almost 11 yrs now, I now earn 6 figures, I don't do basic WordPress setup, but I reverse engineer wordpress plugins and wordpress core, integrating API and other platforms in it, so far WordPress is good, but a developers advise don't become like me, go learn Python instead, the more fewer WordPress developers are there, the more BIG $$$$$$ valuable we become, just like COBOL, I am just waiting for that time to come. so new bees out there go, learn Python, Assembly and C it's for you're own good.

  18. I know how to code CSS, Javascript, JQuery etc.. But to be honest dude WordPress save time. If you want to be a hardcore developer then use Laravel instead.
