Password Manager NordPass has released a list of the most commonly used passwords for 2022, along with how long it will take to crack them.The study is based on a study of 30 different countries Analysis of 3TB database.The researchers separated the data into different verticals, which allowed for statistical analysis by country and gender. For unimportant passwords, most people choose numbers or phrases that are easy to remember.Eighteen of the 20 most commonly used passwords can be cracked in under a second; onlyA few may take 10 seconds or more, such as guest and col123456.
NordPass also released stats related to how passwords are affected by popular trends: Oscars as a password increases significantly during Academy Awards season, and passwords with the same name also increase during popular movie/TV shows. The researchers also noticed that the passwords shared the same pattern from year to year, with sports teams, movie characters, and food dominating each password list.
NordPass offers some advice on managing passwords and online security in its report:
- create a complex password,A password of at least 12 characters and a variety of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Using a password generator is the easiest way to create complex passwords.
- Do not reuse passwords.A single password for multiple accounts makes the hacker’s job much easier. If only one account is compromised, all your other accounts are compromised.
- Regularly check which accounts you still use and which ones you no longer access. Unused accounts can put your online security at risk because you might not notice when they are compromised.
- Check password strength and update regularly.Regularly assess your password health. Identify weak, reused or old passwords and strengthen your online security with new complex passwords.
- Use a password managerTo securely store and access your passwords is the easiest and most effective way to improve your overall online security.
