Google built a feature called Predictive Back Gesture into the Android 13 system. This is a set of gesture operation solutions provided by Google, which allows users to shrink the application window and display a preview of the home screen when the user swipe back.
While this is a quick, natural, and logical set of interactions, there is still some Android user feedback that “I can’t see the last screen I was on before returning to the home screen”. The reason for this problem is that the current feature only provides visual feedback to remind users that they are exiting the application, but some users will exit an application by mistake from time to time because they do not know which page level of the application they are returning to .
As Android 14 continues to develop, Google will expand this functionality even further. At the recent Android Dev Summit, Google said that it will not only bring predictive return gestures to Android 14 by default, but this feature will also apply inside apps, showing users a screen preview of the previous page level.
With Android 14, users will get a similar experience when swiping within apps. Let users know which page the back gesture will take them to by utilizing default or custom animations.
If you are a long-time iOS user, then this feature may be familiar to you. On iOS, the user can return to the previous page level in the application by swiping to the right from the left side of the screen, and as the gesture slides, the preview screen of the previous page will also appear together.
Judging from the release time of Android in the past few years, the Android 14 developer preview is expected to be launched in February next year.
