GIMP 2.99.14 is released, the latest development release on the way to GIMP 3.0.
GIMP, the acronym of GNU Image Manipulation Program (GNU Image Processing Program), is a free and open source bitmap image editor for image photo retouching and editing, free drawing, resizing, cropping, photo montage, and image replacement formatting and other specialized tasks. GIMP has almost all the functions required for image processing, known as Photoshop under Linux.
One of the most notable changes in GIMP 3.0 is the transition from GTK2 to the GTK3 toolkit, but there are of course many other improvements in development. Some of the latest developments in the latest GIMP 2.99.14 development release include:
- Improved alignment tool to make it easier to work and reduce complexity
- New outline option for text tool
- All conversion tools are now automatically activated
- Fine-tuning GIMP’s copy-paste handling
- A new “gray” theme for GIMP.
- Faster XCF saving
- Vectors/Paths now have the correct structure in the XCF file format.
- Improved file output to PDF, AVIF, Adobe PSD, JPEG XL, and other file format handling improvements
As for when GIMP 3.0 will finally be launched, the release announcement mentions:
“With this update, we’re getting really close to the official release of GIMP 3.0. As you can see from the 3.0 roadmap, most items are ‘near complete’ or ‘done’. When we start working on specific issues At the time, we had clearly reached a new stage of development.”
Maybe we’ll finally see GIMP 3.0 officially released in 2023?
