RetroArch is an emulator, game engine and media player front end that allows users to run classic games on a wide variety of computers and consoles. In addition, users will be able to run original game discs (CDs) from within RetroArch.

Available on Steam for Mac

RetroArch for Mac is now on Steam

Minimum system requirements:

  • macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later
  • The GPU should support at least Apple’s Metal 2 graphics API.

RetroArch is now available on Steam on all three major OS platforms.

shader

The new version also features Append Preset and Prepend Preset, allowing shader presets to be stacked together. This means users can mix various shader presets and then save it as a new preset.

Another big change is the replacement of runahead’s system-preemptive frames. What it does is to re-run the core logic to “rewrite history” before the current frame. Frames are only rerun when the state of the controller changes. Runahead is still available and users can choose which one to use.

general improvement

  • Support Apple’s native gamepad protocol MFi, now you can connect DualShock4 or DualSense
  • RetroArch Mac “10.13 and later” now supports both OpenGL and Metal. If you want to use some kernels that only provide an OpenGL renderer and not a Metal/Vulkan renderer, you don’t need a separate version anymore
  • There is now a Vulkan video driver
  • Vulkan driver has HDR function, you can set the color according to your preference in the video HDR menu
  • Provides the “glcore” video driver, which targets the OpenGL 3.2 core environment, which should be supported in macOS versions since 10.7.
  • Various critical bugs/crashes that previously affected the Mac version have been fixed.
  • It has been decided to default Metal Universal builds to the Vulkan video driver. It currently runs faster than the native Metal video driver, supports HDR, and it allows several Vulkan-accelerated cores to run on macOS.

other improvements

  • Added support for system subdirectories per core/database
  • Always restore cached video drivers on exit
  • Add keylogging support for BSV
  • Mupen64Plus Next is again available for iOS, tvOS and macOS. GLideN64 (an OpenGL 3.x based renderer) should be available on Apple platforms.Besides that, ParaLLEl RDP/RSP should now also work properly on Mac thanks to the new Vulkan support
  • SwanStation is available for macOS
  • Flycast is available for macOS
